China’s 2024 growth target of “around 5%” is ambitious, but the focus on national security and self-reliance may put it out of reach. That said, policy is supportive, and the new ultra-long government bond issuance will help. Over the medium term, China has important growth engines from the energy transition and leadership in research and innovation.
